Outbreak of Salmonella Newport

Whooping cough cases increase

Cases of whooping cough (pertussis) reported to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in England and Wales have more than doubled from 421 cases in 2010 to 1040 in 2011. Increases in levels of whooping cough are seen every three to four years and figures in 2011 are in line with cases reported in the last peak year of 2008.

We are a training practice and will regularly have a GP Registrar working with us. A GP Registrar is a qualified doctor who is undertaking specialised training to become a GP.

Healthcare Assistants

We have three phlebotomists/HCA; Ruth Wareham, Kate Gibson and Sharon Grattan. Their job is to take blood samples for tests requested by the doctors or hospital consultants. Phlebotomy clinics are held every morning from 8.20am –12.30am

Phlebotomists also do some of our in-house clinical testing, such as recording blood pressures and electrocardiograms (ECGs).

Practice Management

Jan Burt is our practice manager. She is responsible for the administration of the practice and would be happy to hear any suggestions about how we could improve the non-medical parts of our service.

Administration

Practice Administrator Pauline Diment is our part time Practice Administrator. Pauline assists the practice manager in the day to day running of the surgery.

Secretaries We have three secretaries; Catherine Mears, Caroline Loveless and our senior secretary Anne Rutherford. They are responsible for all of the doctor’s correspondence. If you need to contact the secretaries please phone the surgery before 2.30pm.

Receptionists We have seven receptionists; Jackie Pope, Kate Gibson, Gaynor Kirby, Sally Clarke, Dorothy Fothergill, Keeley Bruce and Loraine Ryall. They are here to help you in any way they can, whether by making appointments to see the doctors or advising on administrative problems. If they cannot answer a query they will undertake to find someone else who can. If you prefer to speak to a receptionist in private please ask.

Dispensers There are four dispensers Jill Maynard, Angela Smith, Naomi Loveless and our senior dispenser Jane Baker. They prepare repeat prescriptions and dispense medicines to dispensing patients.

Community Midwives

Community Midwives are responsible for antenatal and early postnatal care. They Organise parentcraft classes and home visits and have a weekly antenatal clinic where they work in close co-operation with the doctors and the local maternity units.

Community Nurses

The team consists of a sister, staff nurses and health care assistants. They offer a high quality professional and confidential home nursing service to housebound patients who are sick, frail or elderly and to the terminally ill. Community nurses may also visit patients who have been discharged from hospital if the hospital advises this is necessary.

They give help and advice to patients and carers through periods of illness on how to obtain assistance from other agencies e.g. Social Services and organisations offering support in the home. The team can be contacted by telephoning the surgery on 01929 462376.

Health Visitors

Our attached Health Visitors are Niki Hawkins and Frankie Otter. The Health Visitors are concerned with the health of the whole community, but especially the under 5's. The Health Visitors are assisted by Jill Maynard (Community Nursery Nurse) and Jo Jones (Health Visitor Administrative Assistant). The Health Visiting Team visit new babies and their mothers after the first week of life.. The team's aim is to promote health and early detection of ill health. They visit families regularly to discuss health and care of mothers and their children. You can contact a member of the health visiting team at Wool on 01929 401263 or 401268 EarlyBird Café Tuesday 2-3.30pm at the Surgery, Just pop in. A child health clinic also runs each Tuesday between 2-3pm at Wool surgery. Just drop in.

Podiatry/Chiropody
We have a podiatry service held at the surgery for those patients who fulfil strict Health Authority criteria and have been referred by a doctor or nurse. This is not a toenail cutting service.
