THIS SEASON’S VACCINE CONTAINS PROTECTION AGAINST THE H1N1 VIRUS (SWINE ‘FLU). If you have already been vaccinated against swine ‘flu, it is still advisable to have this year’s ‘flu vaccination.

WHY YOU NEED A FLU VACCINATION

You could be at risk from flu.  It’s a fact of life that death from flu is most common in the over 65 year olds.  If you are 65 years old or over, you are more likely to have more severe flu and be admitted to hospital than younger people.  Whilst most people recover from flu after a couple of weeks, some go on to develop complications such as pneumonia, nerve and brain damage.

The Department of Health advise you to have a flu vaccination if you are in any of the following categories:

  • 65 years old or over
  • diabetic
  • weakened immune system, e.g receiving chemotherapy, taking steroids or have HIV/AIDS
  • heart disease
  • lung disease such as asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis
  • kidney disorders
  • are pregnant, and have not already been vaccinated against swine ‘flu

Please note that the criteria does not include all people who have asthma, only those who require continuous medication or have previously needed to go to hospital due to their asthma.

If you are unclear about this please ask at the surgery
